EcoChange publication challenges conservation strategies

Climate change and its impact on species‘ distribution have to be reconsidered in conservation planning strategies. An EcoChange study focuses on the European otter, a flaghip species that is a good indicator of the status of freshwater ecosystems, and analyses existing conservation strategies. The results demonstrate that climate change will change its distribution and that existing conservation areas will therefore no longer offer protection. In order to assure effective conservation of endangered species, species distribution needs to be considered when protected areas are planned.
